Scam Awareness

Alert message sent 22/06/2021 13:48:00

Information sent on behalf of Office of the Police & Crime Commissioner

It is worrying that yet again I am having to warn you all of yet more scams, but it does highlight how big the problem is becoming.

Please be aware of cold calls received from utility companies claiming that you have a balance on your account that needs to be paid. We have seen an increase in reports from people who have been cold called stating that there is a balance to pay on their bills. They are asked to make payment immediately, the amounts reported so far only seem to be a small amount (£22) but once card details have been provided, the suspects have used these to make high value payments elsewhere.

If you receive a call asking you to make immediate payment to a utility company such as water, gas or electricity – do not give details over the phone.

Contact the company direct using a telephone number you can verify and query your account.

Think scam:

Scams can and do affect anyone

It seems too good to be true

Someone you don’t know contacts you unexpectedly

Your being asked to respond quickly

Your being asked to pay for something urgently

Your being asked to give away personal information
