It has been brought to my attention that there have been several door to door callers in the rural area offering to carryout building, gardening or tree work.
I am not trying to prevent the genuine trades professional from increasing their business opportunities, but I do ned to remind people that not all are as reliable as others.
When considering getting work done at your property, speak to friends and neighbours and ask if they have any one they can recommend, get a few quotes. Price is not always a guarantee, the less honest will quote on what they think you can afford rather than the value of the job to be done. Gone are the days of a cheap knockdown price because 'I was passing and had this left over', it is about having trust in your contractor and finding a recommendation.
Regarding payment: This should be as work is carried out not before, they always know where you live, but if they fail to come back it can be a very different situation when calling the mobile number on a leaflet. If an unknown person comes to the door and quotes, essentially you may be about to hand a lot of money to a complete stranger.
It might be that you have to call at an unknown address in the same village and knock to ask about the work you've seen done there. It's unlikely that someone will be offended at showing you the lovely new addition to their home and who did it for them, or the new landscaping and driveway.
If you do see any suspicious people going door to door, or strange vehicles please call 101 and give any description details you can obtain.
